InCommunity Honors Brenda Gates as 2025 Direct Support Professional of the Year
InCommunity has announced Brenda Gates as the 2025 Direct Support Professional (DSP) of the Year, recognizing her dedication, compassion, and commitment to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).
Gates journey in caregiving began in 1986 when she worked as a housekeeper in a nursing home. Inspired by her natural ability to connect with and care for others, she earned Certified Nursing Assistant certification and transitioned into hands-on support roles. By 1988, she was working in private homes, beginning what would become a nearly four-decade career serving vulnerable communities.
She joined InCommunity in 2017, initially as a DSP before advancing to a House Manager and
later becoming one of the organization’s first Community Living Managers. While she has held leadership positions, her heart has always remained with direct support. She thrives on building personal relationships, planning meaningful experiences, and being a trusted companion to the individuals she serves.
“The reason I’m motivated to show up for work is because of the greetings my individuals give me — it’s always smiles, hugs, and stories of their day,” said Gates. “They make me smile all day long. I work at several houses, and I always get the same warm welcome.”
Colleagues and the families Gates supports consistently describe her as reliable, compassionate, and deeply invested. Parents often note how much their loved ones look forward to seeing her, and managers commend her as someone they can always count on.
“Even though some of the individuals can’t speak for themselves, I work to build trust and confidence so they know they have someone they can depend on,” said Gates. “I love the light in their eyes when they see me.”
When asked about her hopes for those she supports, Brenda keeps it simple: “To see them happy in whatever they are doing.” She also offers advice to anyone considering becoming a DSP: “Bring your heart, your loyalty, and your patience. This job is not about getting rich—it’s about the rewards that come from knowing you’ve gained a friend and a family with the individuals you support.”
As she looks toward the future, Gates says she plans to retire with InCommunity, where she has found both her calling and her community.
“We are honored to recognize Brenda Gates as our Direct Support Professional of the Year,” said Meg Blackwood, CEO, InCommunity. “Her passion, loyalty, and unwavering care reflect the very best of InCommunity’s mission, and she embodies the heart of what it means to be a DSP.”
