Morehouse School of Medicine names Gerald L. Hector EVP and CFO
Gerald L. Hector, CPA has been appointed executive vice president and chief financial officer for the highly esteemed Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta.
Hector also held similar positions in higher education at Cornell University, Ithaca College, Johnson C. Smith University, and Central Florida in Orlando. FL. His experiences span all aspects of higher education management that include treasurer, debt management, controller’s office, information technology, post award management, policy office, student accounts/bursar, facilities, grounds, business
operations, auxiliary services, risk management, purchasing and procurement, legal, financial aid, campus safety, compliance, and public private partnerships.
He has also served as a liaison with local elected officials for construction projects.
With more than a quarter of a century serving in higher education, and higher education
support organizations, he is known as a results oriented strategic thinker, and is lauded for
his collaborative and focused leadership style that garners trust and builds confidence in
his divisions and units to deliver on the mission of the institutions he serves. He believes in
growing and investing in all those who work with him for the benefit of the institutions he
serves.
The educational finance expert is a published author and has written several articles and white papers that are still must reads. His landmark white paper, “Navigating the New Normal, Financial Imperatives
for MSI Effectiveness and Avoiding Financial Exigency” is still read extensively by MSI leaders and stakeholders. His first published book, It’s Easy Son, Quit Making Things Difficult, chronicles his journey from Kingston, Jamaica on a track and field scholarship to the varied roles he has occupied including Deloitte and UNCF.
The book birthed a podcast of the same name, that features, corporate leaders, college presidents, Olympians, spiritual leaders, and educators. The show airs on the HBCU Nation Radio Network and
attracts an international audience.
Hector is a sought-after speaker on matters of higher education finances and operations and
continues to give back to the industry by offering his services as a mentor to several HBCU
presidents and is currently a faculty member for the HBCU Educational Leadership
Institute at Clark Atlanta University. In this role as faculty for the institute he shares both his
technical and experiential knowledge with aspiring university administrators who want to
become leaders in the higher education industry. He has been a part of that program since
its inception.
Prior to embarking on his illustrious careeer in education and finance, Hector graduated with honors from Howard University in Washington D.C. where he majored in accounting. He also holds a master’s degree in Christian Thought from the Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary in Charlotte, N.C., where he is also the board treasurer.
The affable administrator is known for his quick wit, and constant reminder to everyone working with him that, “we can’t fix what we won’t face.” A reminder that applies to finances, operations and
culture.
Hector is married to his college sweetheart, Sharon-Kaye, and their union produced three
beautiful children. He is an avid reader, golfer, and writer who is already busy outlining his
next book on his journey in the higher education industry. He is an Associate Minister at the
Hope Church in Orlando, Florida, and spends much of his time trying to inspire those
around him to see the possibilities that are inherently residing within them.
