Jesse Jackson Jr. Forms Exploratory Committee in Anticipation of 2026 Congressional Run

Former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. is taking initial steps toward a possible return to Congress.

On Monday, Jackson announced the formation of an exploratory committee as he considers a bid for Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District seat in the 2026 election. The move follows a push by former U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush and other local leaders who have encouraged him to re-enter public office.

“As part of the Jesse Jackson Jr. for Congress 2026 Exploratory effort, it is my intention to secure a place on the ballot by authorizing the circulation and collection of 10,000 signatures for nominating petitions, commencing on August 5, and to register 5,000 new voters in the Second Congressional District,” Jackson said in a statement.

The Friends of Jesse Jackson Jr. for Congress 2026 Exploratory Committee has filed its statement of organization with the Federal Election Commission and submitted compliance documents to the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The filings allow the group to begin raising funds and preparing for a potential campaign.

Jackson served as the district’s representative from 1995 to 2012. During his tenure, he was credited with securing nearly $1 billion in federal funding for local projects. His legislative record includes efforts to establish the Pullman National Historical Park, expand access to clean water in Ford Heights, acquire land for a proposed regional airport, and improve Metra infrastructure on the South Side. He also advocated for signage along major highways to better identify towns and villages in the area.

In recent weeks, Jackson has been meeting with constituents across the district, which includes parts of Chicago’s South Side, south suburbs, and surrounding rural communities.

Rush, who retired from Congress in 2023, voiced support for Jackson’s return. “His lifelong experiences as a social justice warrior and his multi-variegated accomplishments as a 17-year-long member of Congress make Jesse Jackson, Jr. the most qualified and ready-made of all the candidates who have announced their candidacy for Congress in the Democratic Primary election in 2026,” Rush said.

The 2nd District seat is currently held by U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, who has announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Dick Durbin.
