Spotlight Excellence: ‘Who’s Who In Black Cleveland’ Salutes Blacks in Politics and Government

Highlights Leaders Fueling the City’s Bright Future

The sold-out Who’s Who In Black Cleveland event on July 22, transformed the vibe at the  Intercontinental Hotel into a glowing celebration of the city’s most distinguished Black leaders and innovators, at  the unveiling of the 16th Edition of Who’s Who In Black Cleveland.

The evening, hosted by Cleveland’s prominent news reporters, Damon Maloney, of WEWS News 5, and Danielle Wiggins of 3News WKYC kicked off with more than 500 Clevelanders dedicated to acclaiming Black excellence and advancing a more inclusive, prosperous community.

“The turnout is a testament to the community’s continued excitement over this book and event,” says Rhonda Crowder, Associate Publisher of Who’s Who Black In Cleveland.

Who’s Who In Black Cleveland pays tribute to the visionaries whose influence and dedication are creating a lasting impact and inspiring the next wave of community leaders. This distinguished anthology recognizes individuals who are more than just influencers; they are exemplary leaders whose steadfast commitment and achievements elevate the community.

Honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award and featured on this edition’s cover, Marcia L. Fudge was recognized for her career of exceptional public service and justice advocacy. Her significant impact as in previous roles as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, President of Delta Sigma Theta Inc., and U.S. Representative epitomizes the leadership recognized by this award.  In her acceptance speech, she powerfully stated, “If there was a fight, I said bring it. I’m from Cleveland,” reflecting on her time in Congress.

The Who’s Who In Black Cleveland event also showcased individuals who are mastering success and making impactful strides. The evening’s Game Changer honorees were a testament to their extraordinary contributions. The 2024 Who’s Who In Black Cleveland Game Changer honors included: Ambassador Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley, Michael Bowen, Kevin and Yvonne Conwell, Miranda Creel, Kenn Dowell, Blaine A. Griffin, Stefanie Brown James, Quentin James, C. Randolph Keller, Monique Cox Moore, Tracey Phelps, P.E., The Honorable Michael J. Ryan, The Honorable Melody J. Stewart and Meredith M. Turner.

This year’s Who’s Who In Black Cleveland highlighted the achievements of influential figures who have excelled amidst the evolving social, political, and economic landscape with the Living Legends honor. Their stories of resilience and success were central to the evening’s celebration. Living Legend honorees included: The Honorable C. Ellen Connally, George L. Forbes, Elaine Gohlstin and Dr. Rev. Marvin A. McMickle.

In the role of the presenting sponsor, Delta Dental has significantly enhanced the impact of this year’s sold-out event. Their involvement underscores the importance of wellness in commemorating Cleveland’s remarkable leaders and fostering a healthy community.

“We cannot have a democracy if we do not have the people,” declared Erika Alexander as she accepted the Vibe Award, presented by Delta Dental. Co-founder of Cleveland VOTES, Alexander has had boots on the ground since 2014. Her passion for connecting people and cultivating change is evident in her strategic leadership and commitment to Cleveland.
